Allen Petrus, a grade 12 learner and junior council member from Kuisebmond Secondary School in Walvis Bay, Erongo region, recently represented his region at the National Council session in Windhoek. During the session, Petrus spoke passionately about the lack of parental involvement in children’s education and the negative impact it has on learners.

Petrus highlighted that parents do not monitor the work of their children, nor do they involve themselves in the lives of their children, leading to learners not doing their homework or ending up spending most of their time doing things they should not be doing.
According to Petrus, parental involvement is crucial in ensuring that learners are successful in their academic pursuits. When parents take an active interest in their children’s education, they can help to motivate them to do their homework, study for tests and exams, and encourage them to attend school regularly.
The outspoken student said parental involvement can also help to identify and address any issues that a learner may be facing, such as difficulties with certain subjects or learning disabilities. This can then lead to early intervention and support, which can improve a learner’s academic performance and overall well-being.
Kuisebmond Secondary School is proud to have learners like Allen who are passionate about advocating for important issues that affect the education system. The school encourages parents to take an active interest in their children’s education and to work together with teachers to ensure that learners are successful in their academic pursuits.
