Since 2012, the SWAN Assembly Trust program, led by passionate staff members at Kuisebmond Secondary School, has been transforming the lives of students and families in Walvis Bay. Under the dedicated leadership of volunteers and supporters, including the Flamingo Group in Sweden, SWAN Assembly Trust offers practical skills training for our community members, and provides financial aid for students from impoverished backgrounds.
This year, we celebrated the achievements of our latest graduates in a heartfelt ceremony at Immanuel Ruiters Hall, honoring the hard work of the participants, the dedication of their instructors, and the unwavering commitment of our Swedish supporters.
A Lifeline for Disadvantaged Students
Each year, SWAN Assembly Trust provides financial support of N$1000 to each deserving student, ensuring they can cover essential school supplies and expenses. These funds, raised by the generous Flamingo Group in Sweden, enable students to focus on their studies without the added stress of financial hardship. This support has brought hope to countless families, helping students access the tools they need to succeed.
Community Seminars: Skills for a Brighter Future
Beyond monetary support, SWAN Assembly Trust hosts annual community seminars every September to October, offering courses designed to uplift and empower. This year’s courses included basic computer skills, gardening, needlework, welding, and carpentry—valuable skills aimed at enhancing self-reliance and economic opportunities. With enthusiastic instructors and hands-on lessons, each course has been instrumental in providing new opportunities for participants to contribute meaningfully to their communities.
Graduation Night: A Celebration of Achievement
On Thursday, October 31st, Immanuel Ruiters Hall filled with pride and excitement as participants in these courses graduated. The event began with an inspiring welcome from Kuisebmond Secondary School’s Principal, Mr. J Maswahu. Mrs. Eva Ohlin from the Flamingo Group shared a powerful message, emphasizing the longstanding commitment of Swedish donors to this program. Walvis Bay’s town mayor also honored the gathering, underscoring the local government’s support for educational and community-building initiatives like SWAN.
Certificates were awarded to graduates by community leaders, Swedish representatives, and dedicated facilitators, symbolizing the incredible commitment of each participant. The school’s cultural group added vibrancy to the celebration, performing for guests and showcasing local talent.
Recognizing the Stars Behind SWAN Assembly Trust
The evening also highlighted two remarkable individuals who have been essential to the success of SWAN’s community programs: Mrs. Eva Ohlin, who tirelessly works with the Flamingo Group to secure funds in Sweden, and Ms. Vicky Roberts, a young, passionate teacher at Kuisebmond who coordinates these seminars. Ms. Roberts’s enthusiasm and organizational skills have been pivotal in making each event a success. To honor her hard work, participants in the needlework course presented Mrs. Ohlin with a beautiful traditional dress, symbolizing the deep gratitude of the community for her support and dedication.
Looking to the Future
The SWAN Assembly Trust’s work is far from over. Every September to October, new sessions are held, tailoring courses to the emerging needs of the Walvis Bay community. From basic vocational skills to modern tech knowledge, these seminars continue to be a powerful force for change, equipping individuals to thrive.
As we look back on this year’s graduation, we’re reminded of the boundless potential of our youth and the power of community collaboration. Through SWAN Assembly Trust, we will continue to uplift, educate, and inspire, shaping brighter futures for all.
