Recently, Kuisebmond Secondary School had the privilege of delving into the world of hospitality through a captivating trip organized by our esteemed Home Economics teacher, Ms. Kavetu. Under her guidance, students Angelique Dumeni and Aina Amupolo eagerly documented their visit to the illustrious De Duine Hotel in Henties Bay. Our journey commenced as we stepped foot into the historic halls of De Duine Hotel, boasting an impressive 77 years of rich heritage. Welcomed by a courteous supervisor, we were introduced to our knowledgeable tour guide, Miss Ivan, who graciously led us through the hotel’s enchanting premises.
Exploration
Our first stop unveiled the elegant dining area, adorned with refined décor and an elegant atmosphere. Moving seamlessly, we ventured into the coffee area, where the aroma of freshly brewed beverages tempted our senses. Here, we were acquainted with the diligent waitstaff – Christof, Jade, and Natalia – whose warm hospitality left a lasting impression.
Moving into the central area of the hotel, we stepped into the busy kitchen space, where cleanliness and accuracy were of utmost importance. Donning hairnets for safety, we navigated through various sections, including the dish area and stock cooler. Miss Ivan emphasised the importance of maintaining optimal temperatures (0-10°C) to preserve freshness, a crucial aspect of culinary excellence.
Encounters
Our culinary odyssey introduced us to the esteemed figures of Chef Monica and Sous Chef, who shared insights into the culinary hierarchy. From junior roles like cook and demi chef to senior positions of sous chef and head chef, we learned about the significance of discipline, respect, and diligence in this dynamic profession.
The tour extended beyond the kitchen’s confines as we explored event spaces suitable for birthdays and gatherings. With 20 rooms, including cozy family units and versatile double units, De Duine Hotel offered a haven of comfort and convenience. The outdoor oasis, adorned with lush greenery and a sparkling pool, exuded serenity and charm, creating a perfect place for relaxation.

Our educational escapade reached its peak with an enlightening session at Food Lab Swakopmund, where we had the privilege of receiving invaluable insights from entrepreneur Taliyanah. As the founder, she emphasized the importance of passion, creativity, and perseverance in pursuing entrepreneurial endeavors, inspiring us to embrace our aspirations fearlessly.
