One of the Zimbabwe Junior Mayors

KSS Pride: Rabanus Gabriel Shines as a Rising Star in Youth Leadership!

Sharing is caring!

Rabanus Gabriel, a Grade 11 student from Kuisebmond Secondary School, recently embarked on an enlightening journey as part of the Walvis Bay Town Council delegation to the National Junior Councils Conference. Held at the picturesque Elephant’s Hill Hotel in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, the conference brought together young leaders from across the region under the theme of “Intergenerational Solidarity: Promoting Local Government for All Ages.”

Exploring Victoria Falls

Accompanied by Junior Mayor Fisabo Mapalo from Duinesig Secondary School and Junior CEO Ellen Shatilwapo from Duneside High School, Rabanus represented Namibia with pride and enthusiasm. Their itinerary was filled with enriching experiences, from attending engaging sessions to exploring the majestic Victoria Falls, one of the seven wonders of the world.

Meeting with Her Excellency

One of the highlights of their trip was the opportunity to meet Her Excellency Dr. Auxillia Mnangagwa, the First Lady of Zimbabwe. In their conversation, they discussed the importance of reintroducing traditional norms and values into the curriculum, a significant step towards preserving cultural heritage and fostering social cohesion.

Workshops on Traditional Practices

A unique aspect of the conference was the gender-segregated workshops, where Rabanus and his male counterparts delved into traditional male roles under the guidance of elders and Zimbabwean ministers. From mastering the art of goat slaughtering to learning the intricacies of skinning, the experience was not only exciting but also provided valuable insights into cultural practices.

Amplifying Youth Voices

With One of the Zimbabwe Junior Mayors

Reflecting on his participation, Rabanus emphasized the significance of junior councilors beyond their titles. “Being a junior councilor goes beyond the name; it’s about amplifying the voices of youth and advocating for their concerns,” he remarked. Indeed, the conference served as a platform for young leaders to engage with seasoned councilors and mayors, exchanging ideas and addressing pressing issues affecting their communities.

Closing Thoughts: Inspiring a Future of Active Citizenship

As Rabanus and his peers return home, their experiences serve as a reminder of the vital role youth play in local governance. Through active participation and meaningful dialogue, they are paving the way for a more inclusive and responsive society.
